Add complimentary or frequently bought together products in the cart drawer to upsell or cross-sell

Upsell types

Upsells have two types (click one you want to read the setup guide):

  1. Shopify recommended (Shopify automatically suggests related or complementary products to your customers. These recommendations can come from manual connections you've set between products, the Search & Discovery app, or Shopify's own algorithm. If you haven't configured anything manually, Shopify will figure it out on its own. Learn more)

  2. Manual (you add the rules manually)

How to set up upsell cart drawer (Shopify recommended)?

  1. On your Cartly dashboard, go to Custom Cart → Upsell section → Upsell and cross-sell and click Enable.

  2. Choose Shopify recommended type

  3. After choosing the upsell type (Shopify recommended), choose Module type, Max number of products, and the visibility/button options in the Settings section.

    For Shopify recommendations upsell block the limit is 10 products.

  4. Preview the cart drawer and click Save.

How to set up upsells with manual rules?

When setting up a manual upsell rule, you choose two things: the trigger product (the item that starts the upsell) and the upsell product (the item you want to recommend).

Example: You want to suggest a T-shirt whenever a customer adds Trousers to their cart.

  • Customer adds Trousers → the upsell block appears and recommends the T-shirt

  • Customer removes Trousers → the upsell block automatically updates and the T-shirt recommendation disappears

The upsell block always reflects what's currently in the cart, so customers only ever see relevant recommendations.

  1. On your Cartly dashboard, go to Custom Cart → Upsell section → Upsell and cross-sell and click Enable.

  2. Select the Manual rules and Click Add upsell rule.

  3. Name the rule (internal only).

  4. Under Trigger products, choose All products / Specific products / Specific collections / Tagged products, then pick items, collections, or tags.

  5. Open Upsell products and choose which items to recommend (All products / Specific products / Specific collections / Tagged products).

  6. (Optional) Open Discount settings → enable Offer discount on upsell products, choose Discount type (Percentage, Amount, or Fixed price) and set the value.

  7. In the Settings section:

    • choose the module type (carousel, block, slider)

    • Card type (horizontal or vertical)

    • Set upsell title and "add to cart button" text

    Here, you can also choose whether you want to:

    • show upsell product even if it is already in cart

    • or, replace Add to cart button with 'View product'

    Next, here you can set the maximum number of products to display. The limit is 20 products, meaning, you can show up to 20 products in the upsell block.

  8. Click Add to save the rule.

You can add as many rules as it's required.

What happens if a shopper removes the triggered product from their cart?

The upsell block is always in sync with your customer's cart. If the trigger product is removed, the block doesn't just disappear — it updates based on whatever is still in the cart.

This means if the customer has other products in their cart that match a different upsell rule, the block will switch to showing that recommendation instead. Your customers always see the most relevant upsell for what's currently in their cart, without any delays or manual changes on your end.
